Measuring Distance in Cocowalk

Grade : 7

Materials : list of stores at Cocowalk, conversion chart, paper, pencil, pen, ruler, calculator.

Objective : Students will select 6 stores and 1 restaurant at Cocowalk and measure the distance of traveling from store to store.

Mathematical Concepts : estimation, feet, table, rate, distance, formula, yards, points, addition, subtraction

NCTM Standards: Standard 1: Measurement as Problem Solving, Standard 2: Mathematics as Communication, Standard 7: Computation and Estimation, Standard 13: Measurement

Procedure:
(1) Go on field trip to Cocowalk.

(2) From a list of stores, student will pick 6 stores and 1 restaurant to go to.

(3) Student will make a list of the stores and label them 1 - 6.

(4) Students, individually, will measure the distance from Store 1 to Store 2 and label that distance A. (Their distance will be measured by using estimation. One of their feet will equal one foot. All distance is in feet.)

Point B will be the distance, in feet, from Store 2 to Store 3.
Point C will be the distance from Store 3 to the restaurant.
Point D will be the distance from the restaurant to Store 4.
Point E will be the distance from Store 4 to Store 5.
Point F will be the distance from Store 5 to Store 6.

(5) Place all of the distances and points in a table.

(6) Convert all of the distances from feet to yards.

(7) Using your table :
(a) Figure out how far you traveled before lunch (Points A - C).
(b) Figure out how far you traveled after lunch (Points D - F).
(c) Figure out how far you traveled all day.
(d) Bonus question :

If you were at the mall 7 hours and you spent 6 hours shopping and 1 hour at lunch, what was your rate of shopping 6 hours ?
Use d = rt (HINT : Use the answer from question C as your distance and 6 hours as time).
