Lesson Plan on http site.

Grade Level : 5-8

Materials : Pictures of filet mignons and boneless strip sirloins.

Objective : To give each student practice in doing problem-solving questions.

Mathematical Concepts : Reasoning, Division, Multiplication, Subtraction, and Addition.

NCTM Standards :
Standard 1 "Mathematics as Problem Solving"
Standard 3 "Mathematics as Reasoning"

Procedures :
Gain the attention of the class by asking questions about their favorite food. Then ask them if they had ever eaten filet mignon or boneless strip sirloin. Then show the class a picture of the Omaha Special (filet mignon and strip steak sirloin), for the benefit of those students who have no idea what it is. Afterward, the class data below:

4 (6 oz.) filet mignon plus 4 (11 oz.)boneless strip sirloin constitutes the Omaha Special. The current price is $87.00 but if ordered separately, the actual bill would cost $108.95 .

Then ask the class what would be the cost if a family of six ordered the Omaha Special and each person wants one filet mignon and one strip sirloin. Then give the class about 10 minutes to figure out the problem. After, ask them to tell their answers and write them on the board to get a range of possible answers. Then discuss with the class their methods of doing the problem . After, show them how to approach the problem then eventually solve it. After, compare the answer with the range of answers from the class and compliment those who got the correct answer and tell those students who got the incorrect answer where they had probably gone wrong.

For homework, make a worksheet which would include some problems figuring out the different cost depending on the size of the family and the quantity that each person wants to eat.
