Collecting, organizing and comparing data for cellular
telephone buying and calculating average, and median price and
best deal per cost.
GRADE: 5-6
MATERIALS: Pen, Paper, Pencil, Calculator, Web sites, Magazines and Newspapers.
OBJECTIVE: The students after a demonstration on cellular phone plans and its different types, will be able to collect, organize, describe and compare data and develop statistical methods such as mean and median price and make convincing arguments as powerful ways for decision making.
MATHEMATICAL CONCEPTS:
-Data collection.
-Data organization by category.
-Construction of tables and graphs.
-How to calculate Mean, Median, Mode and Range.
-Interpretation of statistical methods.
-Data analysis.
NCTM STANDARDS: Standard 4: Mathematical connections. Apply mathematical thinking and modeling to solve problems that arise in other disciplines, such as art, music, psychology, science and business. Standard 10: Statistics. Systematically collect, organize and describe data, construct, read and interpret tables. Make inferences and convincing arguments that are based on data analysis.
PROCEDURE: -The teacher will show a cellular phone to the class and pass it around.
Some information about how to get a cellular phone will be explained such as: that you have to pay for the equipment, air time and connection service, also that there are different plans, i.e.,: for individuals and for corporations and different rates such as: day time, night time, and weekends.
- The Teacher will provide brochures from different companies such as: Motorolla, Cellular One, ATT, ICI, SPRINT.
-The teacher will divide the class in several groups and they will have to read these brochures and find out the information required in the attached worksheet.

After the group activity, the teacher will review the worksheet for some of the groups and ask them to explain in their own words what they found, and how they classified the different data into the different categories of the worksheet.
- The teacher will explain how to calculate mean, median, range and mode and will also mention the meaning of each term and how to use this information for decision making such as which plan is the best program.
-The teacher will deliver worksheets to the same groups for them to calculate the above-mentioned terms, as follows:
As part of the assessment the student will have to get the same type of information for more companies using web site: http://www.cellularinfo.com, and other sources and find out the best deal per cost.
