Graphing the Daily Revenue of Miami Seaquarium
*Designed for a one day lesson
Grade : 7
Materials: graph paper, colored pencils, revenue records (of Miami Seaquarium) of :admissions office, eateries (the eight combined), and the gift shop; blank paper, pencil
Objective: Student will compile a table and create one bar graph and one circle graph to compare the revenues of the admissions office, the eateries/food places, and the gift shop of the Miami Seaquarium, on a given day.
Mathematical Concepts: circle graph, bar graph, table, data, revenue, comparing numbers, estimation, x-axis, y-axis, statistics, organizing data, fraction, ratio, rounding, denominator.

Procedure: (1) Students will be given 10 revenue records. Records 1 - 8 will be the revenue earned from each of the eight restaurants on a given day. Record 9 will be the revenue earned from Main Gate admissions on that same day and Record 10 will be the revenue earned from the Gift Shop on that same day. (See attached sheet).
(2) Students will write down the total revenue earned from each of the 8 eateries, using records 1 -8 (when they do this they should end up with 8 totals). Next, students will add up the 8 totals to get an overall total for the 8 eateries for the given day.
(3) Students will compile a table of the revenues of the 8 eateries (a combined total), Main Gate admissions, and the Gift Shop, so that the table looks as follows : EXAMPLE :
Attraction Revenue for given day
Main Gate Admission $235,222
8 eateries total $567,333
Gift shop $523,334
(4) Do a bar graph (using table created) to compare all of the revenues to each other. Label the x-axis, Main attractions of the Seaquarium and the y-axis revenue. (Estimate/Round the numbers to make the graphing easier)
(5) From the bar graph, figure out and name the area that makes the most money on that given day. Also name the area that made the least amount of money. Figure out the range of the bar graph, also. (Where range = highest # - lowest #).
(6) Calculate the total revenue for the park on the given day by using the table created in step 3. (Add up all three of the revenue and that will give the total revenue for the day).
(7) Make a circle graph to show what fraction of the total revenue for the park (on a given day) was spent on eating, shopping, and admissions. This can be done by (use the table):
(a) First, do a rato of the eating to the total (revenue of 8 eateries/total revenue).
(b) Second, do a ratio of the shopping to the total (revenue of gift shop/total revenue).
(c) Third, do a ratio of the admission to the total (revenue of main gate admissions/total revenue).
(d) Fourth, with all of these ratios, estimate them to make the fractions compatible for a circle graph.
Example : (1) If the ratio for part a came out to be $567,333/$1,325,889, and the ratio for part b came out to be$523,334/$1,325,889 and the ratio for part c came out to be $235,222/$1,325,889, figure out the decimal values for each. So, part a, as a decimal, would be 0.43, part b would be 0.40, and part c would be 0.18. Round each decimal to the tenths place. Then, convert each decimal to a fraction, with 10 as the denominator. Then construct your circle graph with 10 parts (equal). Lastly, shade/fill in the appropriate information.

(1) admissions, (2) the eight eateries, (3) the gift shop (obtained from the
daily financial report of Miami Seaquarium. They have this
information handy for audits. The information is compiled nightly,
as part of their close out service. They have to report how
much money is earned daily for auditing purposes).
