Using Measurement Conversions in a Real Life Application

Grade : 6

Objective: Student will convert different measurements (in relation to weight) and then compare them using the weights of a sea lion, dolphin, killer whale, and a manatee.

Materials : Miami Seaquarium pamphlet which gives the weights of the above animals, formulas to convert from pounds to kilograms and tons to kilograms, paper, pencil, graph paper.

Mathematical Concept: conversion, weight, kilogram, measuring, pounds, tons

NCTM Standards:
Standard 2: Mathematics as Communication, Standard 4: Mathematical Connections, Standard 5: Number and Number Relationships, Standard 7: Computation and Estimation, Standard10: Statistics.

Procedure:
(1) After reading the Seaquarium pamphlet, students will make a table of the weights of the sea lion, manatee, dolphin, and killer whale.

(2) After the table is complete, students will graph the data using a bar graph.

(3) Students will then rank the animals in order from greatest to least. (in terms of weight).

(4) Lastly rank in order from least to greatest in terms of weight.

(5) Find the range if you that the range is the high minus the low range.

(6) How many sealions and dolphines would it take to balance a killer whale and a manatee? (Hint: use weights to find answer.)
