Solving problems

GRADE: 5-8

MATERIALS: Dade County Fair. Adult and kid rides

OBJECTIVES: To get each student to approach problem solving questions logically.

MATHEMATICAL CONCEPTS : Divisions , multiplications and subtractions.

NCTM STANDARDS:
Standard 1: "Math as problem solving"
Standard 3: "Math as reasoning"

PROCEDURE : I would give the class this information below.

The promoters of Dade County Fair offers a bargain in which they sell a ticket for $35.00 for an adult to enter the fair and ride all day , also one ticket for $25.00 for a child to enter the fair and ride all day. The regular entrance fee is $2.50 for an adult and $1.50 for a child, $3.50 for each adult ride and $2.00 for each kid ride. I would then ask them this question below.

What is the least number of rides can a kid have in order to benefit from the bargain ?

I would then give the class 20 minutes to try and figure-out the problem. After, I would ask the class to tell me their answers (if completed) which I would write on the chalkboard (or dry-erase board), then I would have an open discussion about the diffe rent ways in which the class did the problem . I would then show the class how to approach the problem and eventually solve it, using the most easy method. After, I would tell the class for homework, find the least number of rides an adult can have in o rder to benefit from that bargain.
