Surveying during a Basketball Game
Grade : 10
Materials : tally sheet worksheet, graph paper, pencils, colored pencils
Objective : Students will go to a high school basketball game, survey
the crowd during halftime, and use that data to compile a table (from a tally sheet)
and a histogram or bar graph (depending on which group placed in).

Procedure :
(1) Students will be placed in groups of 6. There will be
5 groups.
(2) Each group will be given a different question.
Group 1 - What type of snack did you buy ? Popcorn?
Pizza ? Candy ? Hot dog ? None ?
Group 2 - How far did you travel to get to the game? under 1 mile ? 1-5 miles ? 6-10 miles ? 11-15 miles ? over 15 miles ?
Group 3 - What type of transportation did you use to get to the game ? car? bus? bicycle? foot?
Group 4 - How many games did you attend this season? 0-2? 3-5? 6-8? over 9?
Group 5 - What type of beverage did you buy during the game? water? Coke? Sprite? Diet Coke? None?
(3) Go on a fieldtrip to a high school basketball game.
(4) During halftime, the groups will survey the crowd using their question. All information gathered will be recorded on a tally sheet (format on separate sheet, which is attached).
(5) In the next class period, students will compile a table of their data collection.
(6) From this table, students will construct either a histogram or bar graph, depending on their group assignment.
(7) Each group will orally report their findings using the graph as visual aid.
